Openness and honesty when things go wrong: the professional duty of candour is the title of new guidance to be issued by the GMC.

The new guidance sets out what is expected of every doctor practising in the UK when something goes wrong.

It builds on advice in Good medical practice which specifies a doctor’s professional duty to be open and honest with patients, to report patient safety incidents and also for managers to put in place systems that allow concerns to be raised and incidents investigated, and that protect staff who raise a concern from unfair criticism or action.
