Generic Profitability

The table above shows the discount, and therefore the profitability of the top twenty most profitable generics for November 2019 based on a realistic market price.

But do you take into account the clawback?

Currently for most dispensing doctors the clawback of 11.18% is applied to all items dispensed from your

dispensary.

Many generics suppliers, if not all, will show you or give you a discount from Drug Tariff on your generic

purchases, which is great news and means you should be able to dispense most of your high volume lines at a margin.

But don’t forget the clawback!

As the clawback is set to 11.18%, as previously stated, this means that any discounts on a basket of products, for example, need to be reduced by 11.18% to give you the true discount.

So if your supplier offers you a blanket discount of 60% on your purchases, this is actually 48.82%.

The clawback effectively reduces your margin on medicine dispensing by about 10%, this is a pretty good

ready reckoner when looking at your dispensary profitability.

And don’t forget, this clawback applies to ALL products dispensed via your dispensary.
